Lesson #6 - Dutch Baby with Alexis

Alexis was in town this week so she spent time with Sawyer in the kitchen.   There were not as many pictures capture during this lesson because I tried to back out and let them do their thing. It was an awesome experience for both of them.  Is the same parent always involved in the weekly cooking lessons? It's a great idea to switch it up and let the other parent do one lesson.  I know it's hard sometimes to find the time, but it will make a lasting impression on your little one.

Prep Time: 15 mins

Total Time:  45 mins

Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted and divided

  • 2 3/8 oz all-purpose, approx. 1/2 cup

  • 3 tablespoons vanilla sugar, plus extra serving

  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/2 cup whole milk, room temp

  • 2 large eggs, room temp

PREHEAT OVEN TO 375 DEGREES

STEP ONE:

Place 2 tablespoons of butter into a 10-inch cast iron skillet and place it in the oven.  We substituted the cast iron skillet for just a solid deep metal pan.

Set the remaining tablespoon of melted butter aside to cool slightly.  Wait 10 minutes before assembling the other ingredients.

STEP TWO:

Place the flour, vanilla sugar, salt, milk, eggs and remaining tablespoon of butter into the bowl of a food processor or blender for 30 seconds.  We chose to use a hand blender to mix the ingredients today.

STEP THREE:

Slowly pour the batter into the preheated skillet.  Then bake on the middle rack of the oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until the edges are puffed and browned.

STEP FOUR:

Remove the Dutch Baby from the pan and sprinkle with additional confectioner sugar.

On this day we also took the boys to the local shelter to meet some new dogs.  It was their first time adventuring to the shelter, but very close to Alexis' heart.  She has rescued several dogs!  Unfortunately, we did not rescue one today even though Sawyer so desperately wanted to.
