Lesson #4 - Satisfying Sugar Cookies
We are all about the boys finding their passions. It is evident that Sawyer has a strong passion when he is in the kitchen. He is always asking to help and each week he gets so excited for his lesson. Today's sugar cookies are going to hit Sawyer's major sweet cravings.
Prep Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 30-40 mins
Servings: approx. 2 dozen
Ingredients:
1 cups butter (softened)
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 Teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup confectioners sugar topping
2 tablespoons milk topping
Food Coloring topping
PREHEAT OVEN TO 375 DEGREES
STEP ONE:
Blend the butter and sugar with an electric mixer (or in a large bowl with a hand mixer). Beat in the egg then mix in vanilla.
STEP TWO:
Slowly mix in the flour and mix until a soft dough forms. We did end up holding the bowl for Sawyer so he could add the flour. It was a little two hard doing it from the bowl because it was just all sliding in.
STEP THREE:
TASTE THE DOUGH! Disclaimer: There is raw egg in the mixture so use your discretion. Sawyer without a doubt tastes everything he makes so we let him explore the flavors.
Spill the dough out onto the counter and pat/roll into two balls. Once separated flatten each ball into a disc and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill in the fridge for at least half hour but up to four days.
STEP FOUR:
Work with one disc at a time and roll it out to about 1/8 inch thick. we find this is always hard to get perfect so decide how think you want your cookies and do your best.
Sprinkle a little flour if the dough starts to stick to the rolling pin.
STEP FIVE:
Cut out the cookies with cookie cutters and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. (Most recipes will say ungreased cookie sheet, but we always use spray as a precaution)
STEP SIX:
Bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
We always let Jameson put the cookies in the oven himself so he learns all the steps and safety precautions. We will help him push it all the way in but he learns about the heat of the oven and how to be careful while placing them in. We recommend this based off your own child's ability. Be smart and don't force if it is not safe to accomplish.
STEP SEVEN:
While the cookies are cooking make the sweet glaze.
In a bowl mix place 1 cup of confectioners sugar and stir in 1 tablespoon of milk at a time until the mixture is thick but spreadable. At this time separate out into smaller bowls depending on how many colors you want to mix. In each smaller bowl add a few drops of food coloring until the color you want is reached.
STEP EIGHT:
After the cookies cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes transfer them over to the cooling rack. Once they are cool enough to touch start the decorating. Be creative with the glaze mixing colors and adding sprinkles if you want. This is their canvas so let them be free.
